You can wash the tables with an all-purpose cleaner or simply warm water. You may rub lightly with a scouring pad, but not too hard; avoid steel wool scouring pads. It is best to use a microfiber cloth. Be sure to dry the table thoroughly after use. Definitely do not use corrosive products or vinegar. Avoid direct contact with hot objects such as pans or plates, so be sure to use a coaster.
The tables can certainly take a beating. Your children can play on them perfectly well. By "normal toys," we mean playing with cars on the tables, coloring, modeling... it's all possible. Of course, heavy building blocks or things that can fall hard on the table can cause damage. It is important to keep this in mind.
